In May 2019, it was announced that Rosamund Pike had been selected to star in the film written and directed by Jay Blackeson. In June, Peter Dinklage and Eiza González were added. In July 2019, Chris Messina and Diane West joined the cast of the film. Filming began in July 2019. Scenes were filmed in Dedham, Massachusetts, including the Norfolk County Registry.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2020. Shortly thereafter, Netflix obtained distribution rights for the film in certain countries, including the United States, Germany, Latin America, South Africa, the Middle East. Prime Video later acquired the rights in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand and the UK through international distributor Black Bear STX.
