Joe Sun-hee began writing his story 10 years before the film was released after a friend talked to him about the dangers of extraterrestrial debris. All commenced with the impression that extra-terrestrials were compiling vacuum debris. [He] heard these fast-moving fragments of space debris grow and cause space collisions [and] realized that the subject was covered in animation and games, but never in a film. [He] started writing the script, wondering how a Korean with a persistent mentality would approach the problem.
Visual effects company Dexter Studios, which was behind the production of the action film Together with the Gods: Two Worlds and Ashfall, was hired to sweep space.
In June 2018, it was announced that Song Joong-ki agreed to star in Jo Sung-hee’s next film. This is the second collaboration since A Werewolf Boy (2012). In January 2019, Kim Tae-ri was offered the role of captain of a spaceship, followed by Jin Seon-kyu as a security guard in April.
Principal photography started on July 3, 2019, and photos ended on November 2.
In June 2020 it was announced that its release had been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with plans to premiere the film during the Chuseok holidays. As of August 2020, discharges were further postponed due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in South Korea.
It was declared openly in November 2020 that the movie would be broadcasted entirely on Netflix. Space Sweepers is slated for release on February 5, 2021.
